Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Herbert C. "Herb"
Catterfeld, 85, died Wednesday at his daughter's
home in Traverse City after a courageous battle
with pulmonary fibrosis.
Herb was born the son of Herbert J. and
Hermina (Marks) Catterfeld on January 8, 1916
in Burt. On January 20, 1945, he married his best
friend, the former Valdina E. Kaus of Saginaw.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in
the Southwest Pacific Theater in the U.S. Air
Corps-Fifth Air Force, 22nd Bomb Group. He
worked as a Project Engineer for Michigan Bell
Telephone Company, retiring in 1977 after many
years of faithful service. Herb enjoyed the many
friendships that he developed in his retirement as
a member of the Michigan Bell Pioneers. He was
a faithful Lutheran and a dedicated member of
each church that he attended. Herb loved people
and upon retirement enjoyed serving as a
hospital volunteer in Traverse City and
Bradenton, Fla. He also volunteered his services
as an income tax consultant.
Herb is survived by his three daughters,
Ginger Hanes and Judy (Gregg) Blaszak, both of
Grand Rapids, and Barb (Dan) Webster of
Traverse City; and his son, Greg, of Torrance,
Calif. He will be lovingly remembered by his
grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike), Kimberly, Lynne,
Lisa, Scott, Laura and Jason. Also surviving are
his dear sisters, Ruth Reinke, Nora Davis, and
sister-in-law, Elva Catterfeld, all of Saginaw.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife,
Valdina, and his brother, Frank.
Dad had a keen sense of humor and lived his
life with an appreciation for the needs of others.
He remained close to his extended family
throughout his life. He also enjoyed traveling,
playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and
walking. The family cottage at Long Lake was
always filled with laughter.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday
at noon, with visitation at 11 a.m., at Redeemer
Lutheran Church, on US 31, 1/3 of a mile east of
Interlochen corners. Rev. Timothy Mowry will
officiate. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial
Gardens Cemetery in Saginaw.
Memorial contributions may be directed to
either Munson Hospice or the hospice of your
choice.
The family is being served by
Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse
City.

son of Walter and Pelagia H. (Mikowski) Novak.
On June 14, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Lake Leelanau, he married the former Eunice
Marie Lamie, who survives.
Because of Lawrence's Polish heritage, his
great love of the community in which he lived and
polka music, he became chairman of the annual
Cedar Polka Fest in Cedar for the past 17 years
and made it well known throughout the country.
He was a member of the Holy Rosary Parish
where he belonged to the Men's Club, the Knights
of Columbus of Traverse City, the volunteer
Cedar Fire Department and was past president of
the Cedar Chamber of Commerce.
He owned and operated a gas station in
Cedar from May 1956-September 1971. He
owned a fuel truck delivery service from April
1960-January 1975. He worked for Leelanau
County Road Commission at Maple City from July
1976, retiring in August 1989. After retirement,
Lawrence still did part-time trucking for various
companies until his illness in 1999.
Larry loved farming and gardening, the
out-of-doors and especially cutting wood, sports,
traveling throughout the United States, Canada
and Poland, and most of all, polka music.
He is also survived by his children, Lucia
Novak, Ron (Lori) Novak, Marilyn Antene and
Gerald (Christine) Novak of Traverse City;
Bernadine (Claude Jr.) Czerniak of Maple City;
Wanda (Wayne) Purzner and Kathleen (Roger)
Hughes of Cedar; and Madeline (James) Houdek
of Lake Leelanau; three brothers, Joseph (Jean),
